Murray to join Nadal at Brisbane International

Image
Great Britain's Andy Murray during the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this year. ANDY Murray has given the Brisbane International men's field an irresistible one-two punch by agreeing to return to the event next summer for the first time in five years. Murray has chosen Brisbane to launch his 2018 campaign rather than the richer ATP Doha tournament he has played in recent years. The five-time Australian Open runner-up's choice of Brisbane as lead-in tournament is a change of tack by the three-time major winner to finally conquer Melbourne Park. The former dual Wimbledon champion did not play at the US Open due to a hip injury, which clouds his schedule for the rest of 2017. Murray, 30, will drop one spot in the rankings to No.3 next week and joins top-ranked Rafael Nadal in Brisbane. Murray was the 2012 and 2013 Brisbane International champion. The London-based right-hander said he would miss two more tournaments, in China next month, and possibly also two more...

REUTERS/Erik De Castro  Reuters MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's son on Thursday told a Senate inquiry he had no links to a seized shipment of $125 million worth of narcotics from China, dismissing as "baseless" the allegations of his involvement in the drugs trade. Opponents of the president, who has instigated a fierce crackdown on a trade he says is destroying the country, say they believe his son Paolo may have helped ease the entry of the drug shipment at the port in Manila, the capital. On Tuesday Duterte said he had told Paolo to attend the senate investigation if he had nothing to hide, besides advising him not to answer questions and invoke his right to keep silent. "I cannot answer allegations based on hearsay," Paolo Duter...

The Syrian army says Israeli jets have attacked a military base in the west of the country, amid reports of a strike on a chemical weapons factory. A statement said rockets fired from Lebanese airspace hit the site near Masyaf, killing two soldiers. Arab media and a monitoring group reported that a chemical weapons production facility was targeted. Israel, which has carried out clandestine attacks on weapons sites in Syria before, has not commented. An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to discuss the reports, saying it does not comment on operational matters. Lebanese media also reported that Israeli jets had violated Lebanese airspace. Somebody Just Offered $1 Million for Martin Shkreli’s Wu-Tang Clan Album

Image
Martin Shkreli once purchased a Wu-Tang Clan album for $2 million.  Now, he’s letting people bid for it on eBay. Please note: this album is actively receiving bids right now, so the valuation could shift dramatically.  We’ll keep updating as things rise (or fall). After donating $2 million to the Wu-Tang Clan two years ago, ‘Pharma Bro’ Martin Shkreli received a unique mixtape.  Now, after losing an unrelated court battle, Shkreli has listed the Wu-Tang Clan album on eBay.  The price has since been soaring. The controversial drug company executive listed Once Upon a Time in Shaolin Tuesday evening with a $1 starting price.  Currently, bidding stands at $995,100, nearly half of what he paid.  The auction has dozens of bids, and might surpass the original purchase price. In the auction, Shkreli explained his reasoning behind the sale. First, he explained that he loves Wu-Tang Clan for their “tremendous musical output.”  Not one to mince wor...

Nanomachines that drill into cancer cells killing them in just 60 seconds developed by scientists

Image
These images taken over 10 minutes show a human prostate cell being attacked by motorized molecules. The image on the right shows the membrane bulging as cytoplasm leaks out of the cell anomachines which can drill into cancer cells, killing them in just 60 seconds, have been developed by scientists. The tiny spinning molecules are driven by light, and spin so quickly that they can burrow their way through cell linings when activated. In one test conducted at Durham University the nanomachines took between one and three minutes to break through the outer membrane of prostate cancer cell, killing it instantly. The 'motor' is a rotor-like chain of atoms that can be prompted to move in one direction, causing the molecule to rotate at high speed. Dr Robert Pal of Durham University said: "We are moving towards realising our ambition to be able to use light-activated nanomachines to target cancer cells such as those in breast tumours and skin melanomas, including tho...

Gas shortages in Texas as Harvey knocks out refineries

Image
Drivers in northern Texas are rushing to fill up their gas tanks as prices at the pump in the area rise and some stations run out of fuel altogether as Harvey continues to weak havoc. QuikTrip, a chain with 135 gas stations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, is keeping about half of them without gas, said spokesman Mike Thornbrugh. "Our experience has been, if you try to keep every store full… you'll run out," he told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth. Strategically closing stations can help sustain supplies in different parts of the city, according to the company. QuikTrip maintains a list of stations that have gasoline available on its website. Around Dallas, pumps at several service stations in places like Denton, McKinney and Little Elm are seeing gas shortages, leading customers to scramble. "We heard there was going to be a shortage," one driver told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth. "So we hopped in the car and came and filled up." A driver in Denton, northwest of...
