Exposure To Artificial Light Increases Risk For Breast Cancer

Image
Women who are frequently exposed to artificial light at night have a higher risk for developing breast cancer, a long-term study found. This was particularly true among pre-menopausal women who have a history of smoking. Researchers say that women who are subjected to such exposures have higher risks by as much as 14%. Women who live in areas that have high levels of artificial outdoor lighting at night are particularly vulnerable, Tech Times reports. Similar studies linking artificial light and breast cancer have been conducted before, but this is possibly the most comprehensive one to take a look at the subject. The researchers examined data from close to 110,000 women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study II from 1989 to 2013. They likewise studied night time satellite images of the Earth, focusing on the residential addresses of the participants. Factors such as socioeconomic status and health conditions, as well as night shift work, were included in the study. Among the participa...

Exposure To Artificial Light Increases Risk For Breast Cancer

Health campaigners said the Government "must try harder" to curb the "devastating all-time high" of childhood obesity figures, a year after it launched a landmark plan to tackle the crisis. Public Health England (PHE) said "real progress has been made" on reducing sugar levels in food items in the 12 months since the introduction of the childhood obesity plan, but leading officials said a "much more robust" strategy was needed to ensure targets are met. The comments come days after figures showed that more than 600 children and young people under 25 were treated for type 2 diabetes in 2015/16 - nearly 80% of whom were obese. PHE said that it would now be focusing on the reduction of excess calories in a range of products in conjunction with the implementation of the soft drinks industry levy, which will come into force in April 2018. The levy, or sugar tax, will create an additional charge for drinks manufacturers whose products exc...

Some Petty Drama About Peter Kraus Becoming the Next Bachelor Is Brewing at ABC

Image
While we still don't know who the next Bachelor will be, we might know who it isn't going to be: fan favorite Peter Kraus. Judging from a seemingly pointed tweet from The Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss, Peter's behaviour in the finale of the most recent season of The Bachelorette is not what the franchise is looking for. One of the biggest problems with The Bachelor is a question that has been plaguing the reality series since its inception in 2002: can two people really find true love over the course of just one month? If you look at all the couples who have ridden off into the sunset after the credits rolled and gone on to find their own happily ever afters (be it with each other, or sponsorships), there's definitely room to argue that, yes, going on The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, or Bachelor in Paradise can result in a contestant making a genuine connection with someone. Just look at BIP's Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert, who recently welcomed their first child,...

Thrust into the spotlight for the first time in her career, the 17-year-old hardly appeared intimidated by the stage. Smith pulled away from the field to claim her first national title Sunday, posting a score of 115.250, more than three points clear of Jordan Chiles in second place and Riley McCusker in third. Smith opened up a 1.3-point lead over McCusker in the opening round Friday but admitted afterward she wasn't particularly impressed by her own performance. She was considerably sharper less than 48 hours later, her 57.850 total in the finals was the best in the 16-woman all-around field by nearly two points. Smith is one of the few holdovers from the 2016 Olympic cycle,...

USA hold off Europe to successfully defend Solheim Cup GOLF

Image
Lizette Salas knocked in the decisive putt as the United States held off the stubborn challenge of Europe to retain the Solheim Cup at Des Moines Golf and Country Club. The hosts came into Sunday's singles in Iowa boasting a commanding 10 1/2 to 5 1/2 lead and that stood at 13 1/2 to 9 1/2 when Salas lined up her par putt on the 18th green. Already 1-up, a half point and the successful retention of the trophy was in the bag, but Salas rolled it in from around three feet to close out victory over Jodi Ewart Shadoff and see the USA reach the magical 14 1/2-point mark with four matches still on the course. Earlier in the day, the hosts edged half a point closer to their target when a ding-dong opening match between Lexi Thompson and Anna Nordqvist was halved. .@LizetteSalas5 locks up the #SolheimCup2017!! pic.twitter.com/eicfkhweAy View image on Twitter View image on Twitter  Follow #SolheimCup2017 🇺🇸🇪🇺 ✔ @LPGA .@LizetteSalas5 locks up the #SolheimCup2017!! 1:51 ...

Special eclipse glasses selling out quickly

Image
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Eclipse mania is building and so is demand for the glasses that make it safe to view the first total solar eclipse to cross the U.S. in 99 years. Lines are forming, prices are rising and shelves are emptying as people scurry to obtain special eyewear to view the sun Monday as it is obscured by the passing moon. Complicating the rising demand from last-minute shoppers was a recent recall by Amazon that forced libraries and health centers around the country to recall glasses they gave away or sold. For stores that still have the glasses, prices are spiking. The ones still for sale on Amazon were going for steep prices Friday, around $11-$12 each. Nancy West, a 67-year-old retired nurse from Utah, was delighted to be among the final people to get glasses Thursday before the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City ran out. It sold nearly 90,000 pairs at $2 each this week. "I will never see a total eclipse again because I will not live long enough,...

Warren Watch: Buffett, Anka team up to sing NFL stars’ praises at the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Image
Paul Anka talks with Warren Buffett before the meeting. Shareholders attended the Berkshire Hathaway Annual meeting at the CenturyLink Center Omaha on April 30, 2016. Warren Buffett and Paul Anka continued their duet road tour, this time appearing in Canton, Ohio, where they crooned a custom-lyrics version of “My Way” during the induction ceremony for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Buffett, a football fan as well as chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., joined Anka with copies of the words in their hands, singing the praises of each inductee: kicker Morten Andersen, running back Terrell Davis, safety Kenny Easley, owner Jerry Jones, defensive end Jason Taylor, running back LaDainian Tomlinson and quarterback Kurt Warner. “You play to win,” Buffett sang to Davis. “That’s football your way.” Anka can take liberties with the tune because, after all, he wrote it for Frank Sinatra. He and Buffett delivered a version of the song in 2014 at a Fortune magazine “powerful women”...

Ohio mom founds music therapy charity after daughter's death

COLUMBUS, Ohio – An Ohio woman whose daughter died of a rare blood disorder has turned her family's tragedy into a charity to help other children. Nikki McCarthy, of suburban Columbus, channeled her grief into the nonprofit organization Sam's Fans. It provides music and art therapy to young patients at Ohio hospitals, NBC's "Today" reported. McCarthy's daughter, Sam, spent years in and out of hospitals because of fanconi anemia, a rare genetic disorder, before her death eight years ago. "She was spunky. She was very strong for a teeny, tiny person," McCarthy said. "My husband said she had an electric personality." A bright spot in Sam's often painful treatments, including a bone marrow transplant at age 11, was working with music therapist Brian Schreck. "When you're in a bone marrow transplant unit, it's the equivalent of maximum security prison in a hospital," said McCarthy's husband and Sam's fathe...

Garbine Muguruza, of Spain, reacts after defeating Simona Halep, of Romania, in the women's singles final at the Western & Southern Open, Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, in Mason, Ohio. Muguruza won 6-1, 6-0.  MASON, Ohio (AP) -- Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza added another trophy in her breakthrough summer, beating Simona Halep on Sunday for her first Western & Southern Open title. Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell expected to miss Week 3 of preseasonLe'Veon Bell has averaged nearly 130 yards from scrimmage per game over his first four seasons.

Image
Le'Veon Bell is expected to stay away from the Pittsburgh Steelers for Week 3 of the preseason, a source tells ESPN. The source would be surprised, however, if Bell isn't back with the Steelers shortly after that, citing his love for football. Le'Veon Bell has averaged nearly 130 yards from scrimmage per game over his first four seasons. Bell can always rearrange his plans, but currently he's slated to remain training on his own for at least the next few days. The two sides tried to hash out a long-term deal before the July 17 deadline expired for players with franchise tags to sign extensions. Instead, Bell skipped training camp and hasn't signed his $12.1 million franchise tender. He has been in South Florida for most of August. The Steelers play their third preseason game Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts, with the first-team offense set to play well into the first half. The third preseason game is traditionally where starters receive their ...

Jerry Lewis, Mercurial Comedian and Filmmaker, Dies at 91

Image
Jerry Lewis wrote, produced and directed many of his own films. Jerry Lewis, the comedian and filmmaker who was adored by many, disdained by others, but unquestionably a defining figure of American entertainment in the 20th century, died on Sunday morning at his home in Las Vegas. He was 91. His death was confirmed by his publicist, Candi Cazau. Mr. Lewis knew success in movies, on television, in nightclubs, on the Broadway stage and in the university lecture hall. His career had its ups and downs, but when it was at its zenith there were few stars any bigger. And he got there remarkably quickly. Barely out of his teens, he shot to fame shortly after World War II with a nightclub act in which the rakish, imperturbable Dean Martin crooned and the skinny, hyperactive Mr. Lewis capered around the stage, a dangerously volatile id to Mr. Martin’s supremely relaxed ego. After his break with Mr. Martin in 1956, Mr. Lewis went on to a successful solo career, eventually writing, pro...
